Portable units (gravity-fed or pressurized) hold a finite volume of flushing fluid. Day to day, most portable units hold 9–16. But they run out. Here's the thing — a 15-minute flush requires roughly 12–18 gallons. They're useful for remote job sites, temporary work zones, or as supplements. Do the math.
Combination Units
Combination units pair an eye/face wash with a drench shower. One motion. But required when the hazard involves both eye and body exposure — think corrosive liquids, strong acids, alkalis. One pull activates both. No thinking required.

If the hazard is strong acid or caustic (pH ≤ 2 or ≥ 11), the station should be immediately adjacent — essentially next to the hazard. Same for high-temperature materials or anything that can cause instantaneous damage.
Mounting height matters. On top of that, the spray heads need to sit 33–53 inches from the floor. The user shouldn't have to crouch, stretch, or stand on tiptoes. The spray pattern must center on the eyes when the user leans over naturally.
Water Temperature: The Tepid Rule

One motion. That's why one second or less. Push plate, pull strap, foot pedal, or sensor — doesn't matter as long as it stays on without the user holding it. Day to day, hands-free is non-negotiable. The victim needs both hands to hold eyelids open.

Blocking access with pallets, carts, or "temporary" storage. Seen it a hundred times. The station is there — behind a stack of totes. Ten seconds becomes forty. That's a citation waiting to happen.
